Personal Trainer Myths Debunked

Before we get too deep here, the de-bunking we will explore is based on MY experience and MY personal training clients. I cannot speak for all personal trainers obviously.

  1. You need a personal trainer to get fit.

Totally NOT true. You need a personal trainer to teach you proper form and help you set up a training program. You may need a personal trainer for motivation. Can you get fit doing your own research and banking on your own knowledge? You bet.

  2. Personal trainers are for athletes and celebrities.

Another untruth. Personal trainers are for anyone who wants to learn, needs a kick in the butt, or needs motivation.

  3. A Personal Trainer will try to sell me supplements.

Another strong NOPE! I'm sure that there are those who own a MLM business they believe in and will talk about it. A lot. However, for the most part, we want you to feel comfortable in our presence which does not include a sales pitch.

  1. A personal trainer will make me skinny/too muscle-y.

Again, NOPE. A personal trainer will ask you about your own personal goals. Let's be honest for a quick minute here.....most, if not all of my clients want to lose bodyfat and gain muscle. They want to change their body composition. They are getting married, taking a trip, doc is hounding them, etc. There are endless reasons why people want to get or stay fit. And we will find and implement a program to help meet your own goals.

  2. Personal trainers like to inflict pain.

This is my favorite myth! Although I have found a bit of humor in the way different people show me they are in pain or actually 'hate' what we are doing. Grimaces or eye rolls or verbal attacks on me....all acceptable and don't phase me one bit. I ask the questions: "how does this feel on your hips, elbows, soul..." and I get the answers. If whatever we are doing isn't working for you, then we will change it up.

All kidding aside, again I'm only speaking for myself, I want to see you be successful.

Whatever your goals are, we are a team and I want to see you win. A little soreness and the stories following said soreness are often very funny ("I had to crawl upstairs last night") but at the end of the day, I am genuinely concerned at your level of soreness vs. an injury......which has never happened, by the way, with the exception of my own injuries.

Hit me up with more myths and I will try my best to de-bunk them!
